1891 Moorhead City Directory
This edition of C. C. Beckwith’s Fargo, North Dakota and Moorhead, Minnesota City Directory was published in June 1891. The directory attempts to list each householder in the community, any adult children living in the home, the person’s address, occupation and employer. Business listings include the proprietors, address and type of business. Here we’ve reproduced the alphabetical listings in the Moorhead section verbatim. The Fargo section, advertising and classified business sections are not included. Please remember that directories missed many people and misspellings are common.
In 1891 the east/west running avenues were generally named and the north/south running streets numbered. Moorhead had no house numbering system until 1902. This makes understanding the entries a bit tricky. Here’s how to read them:
“Anderson Charles, lab, bds e s 3d, 4 n of Garroway.” would be read:”Anderson Charles, laborer, boards east side of 3d Street, 4th house north of Garroway Avenue.” Use this abbreviation list to decipher the listings. |
