Community Contributors and Resources

The HCSCC could not have told this story without the help we had from members of the local LGBTQ+ community.

In Memory of Robert "Bob" Stone

This exhibit would not have happened without the late Robert Stone. It was his idea to interview couples who were married in Moorhead on August 1, 2013 as part of the Breaking Barriers oral history project.

Robert was born in Hawley in 1944. Although he knew he was “different” (and in retrospect gay) when he was very young, Robert followed the cultural norms of his time. He married JoAnn Dahl and retired early from a career in education to care for her until her death in 2010. After JoAnn died, Bob came out and met his future husband, Jan Titus.

He had an infectious belly laugh and loved to dance, paint, and collect vinyl records. Bob connected with people and was a devoted volunteer. He worked with the bleeding disorder community and the homeless and sponsored a Sudanese family. He was a founding member of the FM Gay Men’s Chorus, the Red River Rainbow Seniors, and the Breaking Barriers oral history project.

Breaking Barriers: Harvesting LGBTQ Stories from the Northern Plains

This exhibit was inspired by the Breaking Barriers: Harvesting LGBTQ Stories from the Northern Plains oral history project. In this project, The Red River Rainbow Seniors interviewed more than 174 LGBTQ+ people, friends, and supporters, including couples who were married on August 1, 2013 at the Clay County Courthouse. This project is ongoing, and the number of people interviewed continues to grow. Audio files and transcripts for all interviews are available in our archives and at the Institute for Regional Studies.

The Red River Rainbow Seniors is an organization based in Fargo, North Dakota, that supports LGBTQ+ seniors in the region. They provide opportunities for socializing, networking, educating, and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community in the Red River Valley.
This exhibition is made in partnership with the Red River Rainbow Seniors.

Advocacy and Change

The legalization of marriage for individuals in same-sex relationships was a huge step forward in the fight for LGBTQ rights. However, despite marriage equality, discrimination and inequality persist in many areas of life, including employment, healthcare, and housing.

Are you interested in supporting LGBTQ+ people and advocating for their rights? There are numerous ways to get involved and make a difference.

Volunteer: There are many organizations that work towards expanding LGBTQ+ people’s rights, and they often need volunteers. You can help with events, outreach, or administrative tasks.

Donate: If you are unable to volunteer, consider making a donation to an LGBTQ+ supporting organization. Your contribution can help fund programs and services that benefit people in the community.

Advocate: Contact your local government officials and advocate for policies that promote LGBTQ+ people’s rights. You can also reach out to businesses and organizations to encourage them to be more inclusive and supportive.

Educate: Share your knowledge and educate others about the struggles and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ people. Speak out against discrimination and promote equality for all.

Attend events: Attend LGBTQ+ led events, such as Pride parades and rallies, to show your support and solidarity. These events are also a great way to connect with and learn from others in the community.
