Sauna Festivaali

The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County is partnering with Log the Sauna, Red River Finns, Folkways, and Nordic Culture Clubs- Scandinavian Festival to host Sauna Festivaali, a FREE celebration of Finland’s Centennial. The celebration will be held to not only mark 100 years since Finland declared their independence, but also to welcome Sisu, the TravelingSauna and Finland’s centennial mascot, on its journey across the U.S.

In addition to free saunas from Sisu and Log, the two-day celebration will feature free Finnish coffee and cookies, Finnish lawn games (Mölkky and Rubber Boot Throwing), and a brief program on Saturday, April 29, at 11:00AM, featuring a short history of Finland and a mayoral proclamation followed by live music from Suomi Rosvot (The Finnish Bandits).

Sisu started its American journey in Minneapolis, where the Finnish diaspora is most prominent, and it passes through Moorhead on the journey between Bismarck, North Dakota, and Menahga, Minnesota. We’re using the occasion to celebrate the local Finnish-American culture and partake in one of Finland’s most lasting contributions to the Midwest: the sauna (yes, pronounced SOW-na).

Sauna reservations for Sisu and Log will be offered from 4:00PM-8:00PM Friday and 10:00AM-4:00PM Saturday in alternating thirty-minute blocks, so bathers can either register beforehand or take a chance on the crowd and walk in (i.e. Sisu will be reserved at 1:00PM while Log will be open to walk-ins, and vice-versa). Reservations are currently available through Eventbrite. Those who sauna will also receive $5-off coupons from HCSCC to the museum.

*If you sauna, bring a bathing suit, two towels (one to sit on), and swim/shower shoes or flip-flops. See you then!
