The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County (HCSCC) will host “Parlor Talks: Atomic Age Declassified,” a discussion with former Army physicist and Glyndon science teacher Roger Stenerson about the early years of the Cold War nuclear arms race. As a member of the Army Chemical Center in the early 1950s, Stenerson measured radioactive fallout from atomic bomb tests, including those in Yucca Flats, Nevada, during Operation Upshot-Knothole and the Bikini Atoll during Operation Castle Bravo. HCSCC Programming Director Markus Krueger will moderate the discussion and introduce visitors to the effects of the Cold War nuclear arms race on Cass and Clay Counties, including local civil defense measures, the construction of fallout shelters, and the operations of Air Force guards.
The presentation will be held in Heritage Theater at the Hjemkomst Center from 6:00PM to 7:30PM on Tuesday, August 29. Admission is $10 ($5 for members) and includes the presentation, food from Rex Cafe, HCSCC museum tours, and a local beer (with more available for purchase). Ages 21+.
